Hello! Let me introduce you to Rotary and, in particular, the Rotary Club of Bristol. There couldn't be a better time! Bristol Rotary is 100 years old this year. Ours was the very first Rotary club in the South West which gave rise to many other clubs throughout the region.
The heart of Rotary has always been the same - meet and make new friends and be a part of both a local and worldwide organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of others both in Bristol and across the world. Friendship with a purpose - and we have real fun doing it! So why not give us a try?
We meet every Monday at the Bristol Hotel, alternating between lunchtimes and the evening. We enjoy a two course meal together and hear a variety of very entertaining speakers. Please get in touch and come along as our guest if you think this might be for you.
Briefly, to give you a flavour of what we do: in this our centenary year, locally we are working hand in hand with the Meadow Vale Community Association to renovate a dilapidated community centre in Speedwell, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of our city. The refurbished centre will provide a community cafe and a range of vital social, medical and cultural facilities where none currently exist. We are aiming to raise upwards of £100,000.
We also run a range of youth competitions through our schools for musicians, chefs, writers and debaters. And this year we are starting an U12 football event.
Internationally we have worked for many years in Nepal funding projects to bring fresh water to villages and to rebuild schools following the terrible earthquake. Together with our sister Rotary clubs in Bristol, we raised £53,000 to alleviate some of the impact of that earthquake. We are also actively contributing to the worldwide effort by Rotary to eradicate Polio from the world with the support of Bill and Melinda Gates – and we are nearly there!
