Our Club uses the professional and business skills of our members in the design, development and execution of projects for the benefit of the local and international community. Here are few examples.
Run For the Future
Prostate Cancer affects over 30,000 men and kills over one third of those each year in the UK, similar statistics to breast cancer in women. However, unlike women’s breast cancer there is no NHS screening programme for prostate cancer and, as a result, only 1 man in 12 benefits from the PSA screening test.
In 2006, our club launched an annual 5km Family Fun Run on the Bristol Downs to raise awareness about prostate cancer and to raise funds for a joint research project by the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) and University of the West of England (UWE).
The research project is developing a new urine based diagnostic method for prostate cancer and studying the cancer’s progression in individual patients.
Run 2009 on the 20th September took place in glorious sunshine, with just under 1000 runners.
Winner Nick Rose with Carol Vorderman
Among the runners was ex Olympian Nick Rose who came first, for the third year, and TV Personality Carol Vorderman who was lending her support for our Run the second year.
The cumulated total, after Run 2008, was £130,000 but it is hoped that this year’s Run, with its larger entry will bring this total close to £200,000.
See www.runforthefuture.org for stories.
Charity Concert
The Club held its 47th annual Colston Hall concert
on Sunday September 11th to a full house of just under 2000 elderly folk from Bristol and beyond.
The audience were entertained to a very fine musical variety concert compered and staffed by members of our club.
Many of the audience were bussed in by fellow Rotarians from as far a field as Chepstow.
International Project
Our International Committee are aiming to build a much-needed secondary school at the village of Bhoomeshor in West Nepal in conjunction with the Clifton Rotary Club. The estimated cost is £15,000.
The Committee also aim to raise funds for a water supply to a remote village, Kolma, again in West Nepal - the cost, estimated by a Rotarian engineer is £14,000 (some work has already been carried out).
